Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin
Wow, what a powerful book. There was a whole lot of “bringing down low”, and “raisin’ up on high”, and “bein’ saved”. The church is a major character in the book and highlights the father, Gabriel’s (fallen angel…), moral bankruptcy and hypocrisy. The expectations he puts on himself don’t come up to his expectations of others. There is a lot of anger and bitterness in this novel, apparently semi-autobiographical. Can’t wait to read more Baldwin.
i’m actually reading it right now if you ever wanted to borrow it.
my to-read list, thanks.
