A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor
I have heard only good things about Flannery O’Connor. This, as I said in an earlier post, is my first attempt at reading her. She seems to me, not only a supremely gifted writer, but also a writer with an enormous amount of confidence. The stories in this book are amazing page-turners. O’Connor manages to develop characters so quickly, it is incredible. Actually sitting here thinking about it - what she can do in 20 pages or less is absolutely remarkable. The loathing, dread, and disgust you feel almost immediately for her characters, drives her stories over and over again. She uses heavy foreshadowing in every story. This adds to the suspense, wondering how it will all come down. Like I have said, this is a gritty, quick, straight-ahead read, and time well spent. Can’t wait to get around to Wise Blood.
